We have an excellent opportunity for a Political Adviser to join our Good Offices and Caribbean Section, within our Governance and Peace Directorate.

 

Reporting to the Adviser, Head of Good Offices, the post holder will support the Good Offices and the Caribbean Sections’ work programmes in promoting Commonwealth fundamental political values, consensus-building, and contributing to conflict prevention efforts in Commonwealth member countries, through political analysis, policy development and project management. The job combines requirements for sound political judgement, excellent analytical and writing skills, diplomatic skills and sensitivity, effective project management skills, organisational ability, and the requirement to travel overseas as well, sometimes in challenging circumstances.

 

Responsibilities of the Adviser, Good Offices and Caribbean Sections (but is not limited to):

 

The Adviser is expected, among other responsibilities, to:

  • Monitoring the situations in which the Secretary-General’s Good Offices may be introduced; and organising and supporting interventions of the Secretary-General or his/her Envoys in order to mitigate political tension and promote the Commonwealth’s fundamental political values.

 

  • Monitoring and analysing political developments relating to the promotion of democratic values, practices, and institutions in Commonwealth member countries.

 

  • Deputising for as required in overseeing or supporting the work programme of the Good Offices and Caribbean Sections, including in planning, budgeting, monitoring, and evaluation of all programming.

 

  • Participating in meetings of intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations, as well as seminars, colloquia and workshops as required, to promote the Commonwealth.

 

  • Ensuring that the Good Offices and Caribbean Sections’ agreed contributions to the Secretariat’s strategic outcomes are achieved on time and within budget.

 

  • Driving collaborative approaches within the Governance and Peace Directorate (GPD) on relevant projects/programming impacting on political engagements with Commonwealth member countries.

To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria:

 

  • A relevant first degree, such as in political science, international relations, or another relevant subject, and a post graduate degree in a relevant subject, such as political science, development, mediation, international law, or international relations. 

 

  • At least ten years’ experience in an international context, with exposure to inter-governmental processes. Proven skills in research, analysis and writing on political issues, including in providing recommendations to senior management.

 

  • Experience in research, publishing, and speech writing on issues related to preventive diplomacy, conflict prevention, resolution, and post-conflict capacity-building, political negotiation, and project management.

 

  • Demonstrable expertise in Caribbean and or global south issues.
